Das Cover zu diesem Buch finde ich durch die itensiv Pinken Rosen für meinen Geschmack ein kleines bisschen zu pink. Der Stil ist aber wirklich schön und erinnert in seiner Ausführung an klassische Romane. Ich kann es mir sehr gut als dickes Buch mit einem Stoffbezogenen Einband vorstellen. Daher finde ich die Gestaltung trotz des Pinks sehr gelungen.
Über das Buch
In „Vermählung“ erzählt Curtis Sittenfeld eine moderne Adaption des klassischen Werkes „Stolz und Vorurteil“ von Jane Austen. Da „Stolz und Vorurteil“ zu meinen Lieblingsbüchern zählt, war ich zuerst nicht sicher, ob ich das Buch lesen will, war dann aber doch zu gespannt auf diese moderne Umsetzung. Wie aus dem „Original“ bekannt, wünscht sich Mrs. Bennet nichts sehnlicher, als endlich alle ihre Töchter unter die Haube zu bringen. Vor allem da Jane, ihre Älteste bald 40 wird, scheint es endlich an der Zeit zu sein, etwas gegen ihren Single-Stand zu unternehmen. Als ein attraktiver Arzt und Junggeselle neu in die Stadt kommt, sieht sie die Chance gekommen. Doch es gibt diverse Hindernisse und auch die anderen Bennet-Schwestern haben es nicht leicht…
Wie gewohnt liegt der Fokus der Geschichte auf Elisabeth „Liz“ Bennet. Und auch in dieser Umsetzung ist sie ein zumeist toller Charakter, der gut mit Worten umgehen kann und sich für das Wohl ihrer Familie stark macht. Einige neue Facetten ihres Charakters mochte ich zwar nicht so, aber sie bleibt meine Lieblingsprotagonistin. Ihre Dialoge sind witzig und auch ihr Job als Journalistin ist gut gewählt. Daneben besteht die Familie Bennet mit den CrossFit- und Paleo-verrückten Schwestern Lydia und Kitty, der Dauerstudentin Mary und Jane als Yogalehrerin aus Schwestern, wie sie unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Chip Bingley als Teilnehmer einer „Bachelor“-Show hat mir gut gefallen, irgendwie passte es zu dem gutmütigen jungen Mann, und der rote Faden der Show kommt zwischendurch immer wieder hervor.
Am Ende des Romans befinde ich mich nun ein bisschen im Zwiespalt. Als einfachen Liebesroman finde ich die Geschichte gut umgesetzt, mit interessanten, zum Teil etwas arg überzeichneten und mitunter skurrilen Charakteren, die für gute Unterhaltung sorgen. Auch der Schreibstil ist schön bildhaft und völlig eigenständig. Als moderne Adaption eines Buches, das mir sehr am Herzen liegt, tat mir die Verwandlung mancher Charaktere ein bisschen im Herzen weh. Vor allem der Alterssprung, der vor allem die älteren Bennet-Schwestern ein bisschen als Gescheiterte Existenzen darstellt, die in ihrem Leben die eine oder andere Abzweigung zum Glück versäumt haben. Die meisten der modernen Anpassungen haben mir aber gut gefallen und waren passend umgesetzt. Dadurch gab es beim Lesen einige Überraschungen und neue Wendungen, die mich beim Lesen überraschen konnten.
Fazit
Alles in allem ist „Vermählung“ ein amüsanter Liebesroman. Fans von “Stolz und Vorurteil“ sollten ihn aber mit einer gewissen Distanz genießen und nicht zu sehr mit dem „Original“ vergleichen, da dabei nicht alle Charaktere gut wegkommen. Außerdem hat die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Liz und Darcy hier einfach nicht den Charme des Originals, und konnte mit weit weniger berühren.
