Cover
Das Cover des Buches finde ich bezaubernd. Es wird dominiert von diesem tollen roten Stoff eines Saris, und davor eine mit Henna gezeichnete Hand. Das kleine Fläschen leuchtet geheimnisvoll und auch, wenn das titelgebende schlafende Feuer keinesfalls in einem Fläschchen zu finden ist, finde ich das Cover einfach schön.
Ich bin gespannt, ob das Cover des nächsten Teils sehr anders sein wird, oder sich vielleicht hauptsächlich in der Farbgebung unterscheidet.

Bei so einem schönen Cover bin ich natürlich gleich neugierig geworden, was sich wohl dahinter verbergen könnte. Schnell wurde klar, dass sich dahinter ein Fantasy-Titel mit einem indisch angehauchten Setting verbirgt und spätestens nach der Leseprobe war ich war sofort begeistert.
Kalinda „Kali“ ist eine gute Hauptprotagonistin. Vor allem am Anfang hätte ich mir zwar gewünscht, dass sie noch etwas mehr für sich einsteht, aber insgesamt fand ich ihre Haltung bewundernswert. Sie hat immerhin versucht, sich gegen Ungerechtigkeit zu stellen, auch wenn es in ihrer Position nicht gerade mit viel Erfolg gekrönt war. Obwohl ich Kali mochte, blieben die meisten anderen Charaktere für mich recht schwer greifbar und oft nur durch eine Eigenschaft definiert. Das fand ich ein bisschen schade, da man hier vielleicht noch etwas mehr Plastizität hätte schaffen können. Vor allem in Bezug auf Kalis beste Freundin Jaya, die sie wie eine Schwester liebt, trifft dies zu. Man erfährt von der Verbindung der beiden Mädchen hauptsächlich, weil Kali es immer wieder erwähnt, wirklich fühlen konnte ich es aber nicht. Immerhin haben die Charaktere gereicht, um ein paar von ihnen unschöne Zukunftsaussichten an den Hals zu wünschen.
Natürlich kommt auch die Liebe hier nicht zu kurz und ist eine typische verbotene Beziehung. Obwohl ich mich daran oft gar nicht störe, schließlich kann man das Rad schließlich nicht neu erfinden, hat mich die Umsetzung hier doch irgendwie gestört. Das Kali sich quasi auf den ersten Blick in einen Mann verliebt, kann ich ja noch verstehen, schließlich hat sie noch nie einen gesehen, außer in Darstellungen von Göttern, aber das gleiche gilt ja nicht für Deven. Gerade in seiner Position hätte ich etwas mehr Beherrschung und Weitsicht erwartet. Und irgendwie passten sie für mich einfach nicht so gut zusammen. Aber immerhin versuchen sie, entsprechend ihrer schwierigen Situation, gegen ihre Gefühle anzukämpfen.
Obwohl mir besonders die indischen Aspekte und die eingestreuten Götter-Legenden gefallen haben und es ermöglichten, sich das Land und seine Kultur insgesamt besser vorstellen zu können, so hätte ich mir hier doch wesentlich mehr Input gewünscht. Die Story hat sehr viel Potential, aber vieles davon scheint mir irgendwie verschenkt durch wirre oder schlicht fehlende Erklärungen. Es war insgesamt gut zu lesen und hat mir auch Spaß gemacht, aber auch am Ende erschließt sich mir vieles leider nicht. Und der Schreibstil der Autorin ist zwar insgesamt ganz angenehm, kommt aber manchmal mit sehr merkwürdigen Beschreibungen und Metaphern um die Ecke.
Fazit
„Die letzte Königin – Das schlafende Feuer“ hat mich gut unterhalten und ließ sich schnell lesen. Doch die Charaktere überzeugen nicht wirklich und die Story wirkt unausgereift und die Erklärungen zu spärlich, um meine Neugier auf diese Welt ausreichend zu befriedigen. Ich hoffe im zweiten Band wird hier nachgebessert.
