Die 16-jährige Rhoma vom Planeten Krebs verfügt – wie viele andere in der Galaxie Zodiac – über die Fähigkeit, in den Sternen zu lesen. Doch während ihre Mitschüler die Zukunft anhand genauester Berechnungen und wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse vorhersagen, schaut Rho nur zu den Sternen auf und wartet auf ein Zeichen. Deswegen gilt sie bei den Lehrern als unverbesserliche Träumerin und ist kurz davor durch ihre Prüfung zu fallen. Doch als eine schreckliche Katastrophe das Sternbild Krebs heimsucht, bei der unzählige Menschen sterben, war Rho die einzige, die die Gefahr in den Sternen hat kommen sehen. Völlig überraschend wird sie zur neuen Wächterin von Krebs ernannt, zur obersten Sterndeuterin ihrer Heimat. Aber Rho entdeckt ein Omen in den Sternen, das nichts Gutes verheißt: Die Katastrophe von Krebs war kein Unfall. Andere werden folgen. Und vielleicht wird ganz Zodiac untergehen. Doch wer glaubt einem unerfahrenen Teenager, der ein Monster in den Sternen sieht?

Das Cover des Bandes passt sehr gut zum Inhalt des Buches. Es zeigt zwei Sternzeichen und den Weltraum, und greift so nicht nur das Thema, sondern auch zwei Charaktere auf, ohne dabei die typischen Mädchengesichter zu zu zeigen.
Über das Buch
Rho liest in den Sternen, wie fast jeder in der Galaxie Zodiac. Doch im Gegensatz zu den anderen, die mit Hilfsmitteln und mathematischen Berechnungen arbeiten, ist ihre Art der Sicht eher intuitiv. Als sie bei einer Prüfung ein dunkles Omen sieht, das nur ihr erscheint, glaubt ihr zunächst niemand, bis eine Katastrophe über die Monde von Krebs hereinbricht. Auf der Suche nach der Ursache und um die anderen Sternzeichen zu warnen, macht sich Rho auf zu einer Reise durch Zodiac, unterstützt von ihren Reisegefährten Mathias und Hysan.
Zusammen mit Rho, die ihre Geschichte aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählt, und ihren Begleitern, reisen wir durch Zodiac. Da es nicht mein erstes Buch aus dem Science-Fiction Genre ist, hatte ich persönlich keine Probleme, mich in die unterschiedlichen Beschreibungen von Technik und Co einzufinden. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Werken lag darauf hier aber auch ganz eindeutig nicht der Fokus. Das Setting der Story hat mir sehr gefallen und vereint für mich eigentlich mehr Fantasy mit Science Fiction und ist dabei durchaus auch für alle geeignet, die sonst keine Science Fiction Fans sind. Die Beschreibungen der einzelnen Sternzeichen, ihrer Planeten und der Eigenschaften ihrer Bewohner fand ich spannend und schlüssig, auch wenn das ein oder andere Element etwas schwer vorstellbar war.
Die Charaktere haben mir insgesamt gut gefallen. Am besten lernt man natürlich Rho kennen. Sie ist jung, unterscheidet sich von den anderen und ist manchmal unsicher, außer, wenn sie mit ihrem Schlagzeug auf der Bühne so richtig Gas gibt. An ihrer neuen Aufgabe wächst sie, aber manchmal konnte ich ihre Entscheidungen nicht ganz nachvollziehen, und habe mich das ein oder andere Mal sehr über sie geärgert. Andererseits ist sie natürlich jung und unerfahren, und einige Fehler sind ihr daher durchaus zu verzeihen. Ihr zur Seite steht der sehr ernsthafte und pflichtbewusste Wächter Mathias. Er ist seiner Linie treu geblieben, und ich mochte ihn insgesamt ganz gern, auch wenn ich ihn manchmal am liebsten durchgekitzelt hätte, damit er auch mal ein kleines Lächeln zeigt. Mein Favorit war eindeutig der geheimnisvolle Hysan, der Botschafter der Waage. Hinter ihm steckt viel mehr, als es zunächst den Anschein hat, und er ist sowohl clever und besonnen, als auch jugendlich und energiegeladen, womit er einen krassen Gegenpol zu Mathias bildet.
Die Story hat mir insgesamt gut gefallen und hat sehr viele gute Ansätze. Vor allem die Charaktere haben für mich einen sehr großen Reiz ausgemacht, denn neben den drei Hauptprotagonisten gibt es auch diverse Nebencharaktere, welche die Geschichte enorm bereichern. Gestört hat mich bei Rhos Reise durch Zodiac vor allem, dass es manchmal etwas langwierig wirkte und Rho partout nicht auf ihre Begleiter hören wollte, obwohl ihr das meist nur Probleme eingehandelt hat. Gefallen hat mir allerdings, dass es Probleme und Herausforderungen an mehr als einer Front gibt, sodass es ganz viel Potential und Handlungsspielraum für den zweiten Band gibt, auf den ich mich schon sehr freue..
Fazit
Zodiac ist ein gelungener Auftakt der mit einem völlig neuen Setting überzeugen kann und den Leser in seinen Bann schlägt. Obwohl manchmal etwas langwierig gibt es verschiedene spannende Storylines, und ich bin schon sehr gespannt, wo alle Fäden zusammen laufen werden.
