Bevor sie das Schreiben endgültig zum Beruf gemacht hatte, arbeitete sie nach ihrem Abschluss als Dipl.Verw.Wiss. (wer’s ausführlich mag: Diplom-Verwaltungswissenschaftler) mehrere Jahre in verschiedenen Banken. Deswegen zog es sie von ihrem Heimatort Konstanz am schönen Bodensee in die verschiedensten Ecken Süddeutschlands, bis sie endlich mit Mann und Hund in der Nähe von Stuttgart sesshaft wurde.
Im August 2018 beginnt die ‚Dark Edition‘ von Marlen Gardner mit ‚Dambay‘, einem spannenden, düsteren Thriller, der an der stürmischen Küste Neu-Englands spielt und in dem sich die junge Studentin Anne die Frage stellen muss, ob sie ihren Freunden wirklich trauen kann …

Eigentlich hat Anne überhaupt keine Lust, in den Collegeferien gemeinsam mit ihren vier Freunden einen alten Leuchtturm an der rauen, einsamen Küste im Norden von Maine zu entrümpeln – vor allem, weil sie als Single das fünfte Rad am Wagen ist.

Das Cover von Calamity ist eindeutig mein Lieblingscover der Reihe. Zunächst dachte ich, man sieht darauf Calamity selbst, und das wäre natürlich eine Möglichkeit, aber ich glaube, dass es sich dabei tatsächlich um einen Riss in der Wirklichkeit handelt, wie Magan ihn für ihre Illusionen von Firefight erzeugt. Diese Zweideutigkeit finde ich klasse, und die Farben sprechen einfach für sich.

Seit langer Zeit habe ich nun endlich mal wieder einen Thriller gelesen und sollte es vielleicht doch öfter mal wieder damit versuchen. Reingekommen bin ich in die Geschichte ziemlich gut. Anne und ihre vier Freunde, ausgerechnet zwei Pärchen, sollen für zwei Wochen im Sommer in einem alten Leuchtturm in Dambay für Ordnung sorgen. Obwohl Anne eigentlich keine Lust hat, lässt sie sich von den anderen zu diesem Trip überreden. So machen sich die fünf Studenten und ein Hund auf den Weg in das abgelegene Haus, obwohl vor kurzem zwei junge Frauen in der Umgebung umgebracht worden sind. Schon bald stellt sich dies als großer Fehler heraus, doch die Gefahr kommt aus einer ganz anderen Richtung als zunächst erwartet.Was mich an dem Buch am meisten gestört hat, waren die scheußlichen Charaktere. Nicht, dass sie schlecht beschrieben gewesen wären, aber sie waren unglaublich furchtbare, unsympathische Menschen, denen wohl jeder die Pest an den Hals wünschen würde. Generell hätte es mich vielleicht nicht so gestört, aber die Hauptprotagonistin war so ein dummes Mäuschen, die die anderen bedient hat und den Mund nicht aufbekommen hat, selbst, wenn sie von ihnen beleidigt oder übergangen wurde. Mit solchen Charakteren habe ich echt meine Probleme. Die anderen Charaktere waren sehr unterschiedlich, aber ein bisschen stereotyp. Der zu gedröhnte Jake, Brit, die gehässige und fiese Tochter aus reichem Hause, der ehrgeizige, aber anscheinend nette Ty und die immer gut gelaunte Sarah mit ihrer bösartigen Töle Tinker. Ich mochte keinen einzigen von ihnen, aber das ist natürlich nur mein persönlicher Eindruck.
Da es sich um einen Thriller handelt war meine Abneigung gegen die Protagonisten aber nicht so schlimm, denn schließlich passiert hier der ein oder andere „Unfall“… Marlen Gardner schafft es sehr gut Spannung aufzubauen und die ein oder andere falsche Fährte zu legen. Schon zu Anfang werfen sich schnell einige Fragen auf, die sich immer weiter durchziehen und einem immer wieder ins Gedächtnis gerufen werden. Das Spannungslevel steigt kontinuierlich an und einige Szenen waren ganz schön gruselig. Am Ende habe ich mich gefreut, trotz der falschen Fährte doch den richtigen Riecher gehabt zu haben, es lohnt sich also, ganz aufmerksam zu lesen und die Hinweise im Kopf zu behalten

Fazit
Obwohl ich die Charaktere nicht mochte, fand ich „Dambay“ alles in allem spannend und vor allem am Anfang ein bisschen gruselig. Man wird geschickt auf die ein oder andere falsche Fährte geführt, aber wer aufpasst, sieht vielleicht die Wahrheit.
